Reports coming from the North Eastern Kenyan town of Mandera say heavily armed fighters suspected to be from the Al-Shabaab militant group have attacked the house of the county’s governor Ali Ibrahim Roba last night.

Residents say they heard heavy gunfire and explosions at around 2.30 pm local time.

Casualties figures couldn’t be immediately known.

” I could see the bullet live in the air, there were numerous explosions and sustained gunfire for almost 40 minutes,” resident Hassan Abdi told radio star FM.

Since Kenya sent its troops to Somalia in 2011, there were numerous gun and bomb attacks inside Kenya attributed mainly to the Somalia based militant group, Al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab last year carried out the deadly West Gate shopping mall attack in Nairobi in which more than 67 people were killed.
